Novice Part 2

Entries – 29 Booked in – 20 Training rounds – 8

Judge - Kate Claxton, Ring steward – Sam Rice, Scoreboard – Graham Claxton.

Thank you to Marg and the Committee for the kind invitation to judge at this show, it’s always very well-run with a nice relaxed atmosphere. We were very well looked after, with a fabulous lunch as always, thanks to Val and her team. The weather was absolutely glorious, and the ground excellent for working. My ring steward Sam looked after and guided the competitors round the ring in her usual capable manner, while my husband Graham managed the scoreboard. Thank you to Gail and the stay team for ensuring stays were uneventful, with plenty of space for the dogs. We had some very constructive training rounds; hopefully everyone went away feeling they had a good day even if things didn’t go exactly to plan – it’s still very early in the season… My line-up was as follows:

1st – Friendborn Forever Gold, GR Lynne and Poppy came into the ring today in the running order as a real team with both confidence and exuberance, and were a delight to judge. There was very little to mark, and an amazing rapport between dog and handler. Superb handling by Lynne, whose well-timed commands and excellent use of play between exercises helped motivate Poppy, producing quality heelwork and very tidy set exercises. This team will go far. Congratulations on your win.

2nd – Croxlea Formal Affair, BC Fraey and Ian were another very nice team today who could easily take the red one on another day. This was a calm, well-handled round, with Fraey trying her heart out for Ian in all exercises. She knows her job well, and is a very tidy little worker who should easily win out of this class in the future. Well done to both of you.

3rd – Spanjac Wizzy Woo, XB Jacqui and Izzy are a lovely team who worked later in the day. Izzy is such a happy committed little worker who holds a good consistent position, not easy considering her size. Even in the heat today she produced some very good heelwork indeed, and neat sets. Also placed in B – well done both of you on a very good start to the season!

4th – Soft Touch Lucy, WS Lynn and Lucy were another team who produced a very nice round today. Lucy’s heel on lead was absolutely stunning, with very little to mark. Heel free saw a few handler errors meaning impeding and surging on left turns was costly, as was lagging. Lucy understands her job well and clearly enjoys herself. They could easily be at the other end of the line-up on another day. Well done on your place and best of luck for the rest of the year.

5th – Daisy Dibble, Lab Daisy and Annette produced a good round today. Daisy is very happy in her work, and holds a good position with a lovely attitude. Annette’s handling cost Daisy a few marks today, with handler deviation causing lateral drifting on straights and turns, but overall a very nice picture indeed. The enthusiasm is definitely there, just some fine-tuning and work on handling and you should move further up the line-up. Best of luck to both of you for the coming season .

6th – Shepalian Maid In Heaven, AS Sue and Asha were very much a WOW team who just had a few unfortunate blips today. Asha’s heelwork is absolutely lovely, she works in an excellent position with attitude and style, balancing this with accuracy. Moments of distraction occurred during the round, but the quality of her work overall, along with Sue’s calm assured handling, meant that she still gained this place today. Definitely a team to watch in future, best of luck.

Judge’s Special – Chilli Peppa at Willowyarde, XB Alison and Peppa were an absolutely stunning team. Peppa is 10yrs young, with an agility background but demonstrating today that she is more than capable of turning her paw to Obedience. This was an excellent round, well handled with fabulous attitude. Peppa’s enthusiasm for the work just meant keen faults like jumping/hopping added up and cost marks. Absolutely loved her, well done today.

Thank you to Margaret Garland and her trusty band for asking me to judge at their lovely show: lovely venue, super lunch, fantastic weather and happy, friendly competitors who did not keep us waiting. What more could I ask? Well, a really good steward helps and I certainly had that with Clare, thanks, you were also great company for the day. Thank you, as well, to Jackie who almost had time to volunteer for decoying before I dragged her into the ring! She was also part of Gail Foreman’s well run and excellent stay ring team and worked her dog. Multi-tasking at its best. We may have had a small entry but we did not lack in quality, there were some lovely dogs in the ring today. Nor did we lack in entertainment value (thanks, Jacqui!!)
